SINGLE STEP 365 ~ WRITE YOUR LIFE ~ DAY 94

DAY 94

TRAFFIC

This morning I was stuck in traffic on the 5 Freeway, a typical work day for Angelenos. Usually I’d be upset but today I listened to an audiobook and brain stormed my WIP. The time I sat in once place helped me work out an issue involving my MC. Instead of getting upset and flustered, I arrived at work hopeful and excited that I’ll give my character a clearer sense of who she is and why she is on her journey. Today, I appreciated sitting on the 5 Freeway. Traffic isn’t always bad, it’s all depends on how you look at it.

DAY 93

JOURNEY

A journey begins with the first step just as writing begins with the first word. It’s a slow, deliberate process but if you write every day you’ll reach the end, accomplish a goal, possibly get published. It’s what we dream of.

“It’s your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.”  — Rumi

DAY 89

DEATH

“Life is for the living.
Death is for the dead.
Let life be like music.
And death a note unsaid.”
― Langston Hughes, The Collected Poems

Death is the end.

It will come for us some day. This theme is ever present in my writing. In emotions, fears, denials, the unforgivens. Each moment, each day is a death of sorts. Once it’s gone it’s gone.

“Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

This thought alone, especially the older I get, makes me write. It pulls out my voice from the depths, gives it lift, gives it life. Teaches me courage to share through story, through poems, through my relationships. In the end, I hope to be a positive voice, a reminder that all things are possible, even more so when we hold each other up, give each other a hand, show compassion and understanding in the midst of confusion. Don’t hold grudges, but instead use those emotions in the written word. Work it out on the page. Do it NOW. Most of all, live your life.

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”
― Hunter S. Thompson, The Proud Highway: Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman, 1955-1967

It is truly an honor you’re reading this today. I appreciate all of you.

To all those I miss, I thank you and send love.

MOVIES

Movies take us places we’d never dream of, they expand our vision and beliefs, and they are just plain fun. One movie I enjoy that encompasses all of those things is Stranger Than Fiction. It’s about an IRS agent, played by Will Ferrell, who hears the voice of a women who is narrating his life. The characters, plot, and setting are strong. The movie is humorous, sad, unique. It shows just how connected we all are, especially in midst of the creative process. Plus, after I watch this movie, I always want to pick up my pen and do some writing.

Inspiration, fiction, and real life pulsate at the center of any narrative.

I would never write realistic prose. I don’t like people who try to write in a poetic style, but in the course of their book abandon it for realism, and weave back and forth like drunkards between surreal and the real.”

— Marguerite Young

Write with abandon.
